High School Equivalency Certification

Check the requirements of the training program or job you’re interested in - if it requires a high school diploma or equivalent certification and you don’t have one, you can get one. There are three tests offered in Texas that provide a high school equivalency certification. They cost $125-$145 and cover four or five academic subjects, including reading comprehension, social studies, science and mathematics. Click below to learn more about schedule a test.

 

 

HISET

The HiSET is a five-part exam that covers reading and writing comprehension, social studies, science and mathematics. HiSET candidates must schedule each section separately, and can individually reattempt any sections they do not pass.

Cost: $125 per battery (All five subjects)/$25.20 per individual subject

GED

The GED is a four-part exam that covers reading comprehension, social studies, science and mathematics. GED candidates must schedule each section separately, and can individually reattempt any sections they do not pass. It must be taken at a testing location

Cost: $145 per battery/$36.25 per individual subject (4 subjects in battery)

TASC

The TASC test is a high school equivalency exam emerging as an alternative to the GED that can be taken online and on paper. The TASC test has five subtests (Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies). It takes approximately 8.5 hours to complete.

Cost: $126 per battery/$25.20 per individual subject (Five subjects in battery)


 

Preparing for your exam

Each exam offers some preparatory materials for free and additional assistance or classes for various fees. In addition, there are local resources available for test-takers in SETX for free.

Adult literacy and high-school equivalency courses:

Math, English and Science tutoring:

The StudentNest Foundation offers free tutoring services on a computer, laptop, tablet or phone at (888) 295-3915 or online. The Distance Learning Call Center for Mathematics is funded through a grant provided by the Texas Workforce Commission, Division of Adult Education & Literacy.
