If the job you’re interested in requires formal education, you may be able to get trained right here in Southeast Texas. Below, you’ll find a list of fields with local training programs offered by Lamar State College (Port Arthur/Orange campuses) or the Lamar Institute of Technology.

Lamar Institute of Technology: LIT’s Industrial Mechanics Technology Associate Degree program equips graduates with a foundation of technical knowledge and mechanical skills necessary to install, maintain, repair and troubleshoot machinery.

CARPENTRY

Lamar State College - Port Arthur:

LSCPA’s Carpentry (NCCER Level 1) course teaches students orientation to the trade, building materials, tools and drawings to prepare them for NCCER Level 1 certification.

ELECTRICAL SERVICES

At this time, industrial electrical services training is not available at Lamar State College (Port Arthur), Lamar State College (Orange) or the Lamar Institute of Technology.

There may be independent institutions offering this training in your area.

 

 

HEAVY/LIGHT EQUIPMENT OPERATION

Lamar Institute of Technology: LIT offers  Forklift Training and Aerial Lift Training, as well as Skid Steer Training, and Earth Moving Equipment training.

How long will it take? Forklift and Aerial Lift Training can be completed in one 8-hour class session

INSTRUMENTATION

To get started in instrumentation, LSC-PA, LSC-O and LIT offer Associate of Applied Science degrees in Instrumentation Technology. Students are required to complete 60 credit hours (4 semesters) and can start courses on the Fall or Spring semester schedule.

Lamar Institute of Technology: LIT offers  an Associate Degree in Computer Drafting Technology, which teaches students about basic geometric properties and techniques used to draft models and plans for industrial, residential and civil structures.

TRANSPORTATION & DRIVING

To get started as a commercial driver, LSC-PA, LSC-O and LIT offer Class “A” commercial driver’s license (CDL) courses, which prepare students to drive most commercial vehicles. LIT also offers a Class “B” CDL course, which prepare a students to drive busses and small dump trucks. Check the job you’re interested in applying for to determine if a Class “B” CDL will cover your needs before applying.

 

Lamar State College - Port Arthur:

How long does it take? Classes meet at night (5:30-9:30 p.m.) for 12 weeks

Lamar State College - Orange:

How long does it take? Classes meet during the day for 6 weeks, and at night for 15 weeks

How much does it cost? $3,500 + approximately $200 in agency fees for licensing and testing

Lamar Institute of Technology:

How long does it take? 8 weeks (Class “A”)/ 3 weeks (Class “B”) of daily instruction

WELDING

LSC-O and LIT offer programs in welding designed to prepare students for entry-level welding occupations on a spring and fall semester schedule and provide additional welding skills using  techniques in oxyacetylene, gas metal arc, shielded metal arc, and gas tungsten arc welding processes.
